Senior Counsel
Ann O’Brien joined the Office of the General Counsel in July 2017 after serving as outside healthcare counsel to USC since 2014. Ms. O’Brien advises the university’s health system on technology issues and software agreements, including the electronic health record system and other Information Technology matters. She also counsels the university on privacy matters related to HIPAA, FERPA, CMIA and European data protection laws, and provides legal support to the health system on a wide range of regulatory, risk management, and physician medical staff and credentialing issues.
Prior to joining USC, Ms. O’Brien served for several years as Executive Editor of The Computer & Internet Lawyer, a leading journal published by CCH/Aspen Publishers while managing her own firm, which specialized in advising healthcare clients on privacy and technology issues. She also practiced as an associate at Latham & Watkins for seven years, where she counseled clients on technology issues and drafted and negotiated a variety of intellectual property contracts. Ms. O’Brien was also a member of Latham’s Associates Committee and litigation department, and handled intellectual property and general business litigation matters.
Ms. O’Brien graduated from the University of Arizona with a B.A. with high distinction, Phi Beta Kappa. She also attended the University of Arizona for law school, served as a Notes Editor for Arizona Law Review, and graduated with high distinction and Order of the Coif.
